1895 年乙未戰爭，日本進行接收臺灣，以作為殖民地。當年日軍預計於 10 月 23 日齊集部隊圍攻臺南府城。19 日當晚，劉永福便逃往廈門，使得臺 南府城居民陷於恐慌之中。因為恐懼，臺南仕紳懇求巴克禮牧師及宋忠堅牧 師與日軍進行交涉。20 日晚間在兩位牧師的帶領下，一行 21 人出城至二層 行溪，向第二師團司令乃木希典中將陳情，希望日軍和平進入臺南府城。 在這段臺灣史的關鍵時刻，日軍進臺南城的過程中，二層行溪北岸的二 層行庄與南岸的太爺庄是重要的歷史場域，而不少學界與一般民眾誤以為二 層行庄就是巴克禮與乃木將軍會晤之處，其實是有誤的。 二層行庄是巴克禮、宋忠堅兩位牧師與前衛司令部山口素臣少將見面會 晤的關鍵聚落；太爺庄為巴克禮、宋忠堅兩位牧師與第二師團司令乃木希典 中將見面會晤、遞交府城仕紳請願書的關鍵聚落。而乃木與巴克禮確切的會 談之地則是太爺庄蘇應元大厝。

Japan started to take over Taiwan and build colony in 1895. Japan army gathered and planned to attack Tainan city on October 23. On the night of Oct 19, Tainan city General Liu Yu-fu gave up resistance and retreated to Hsia-men. The Tainan people felt panic and asked foreign priest to make peace convention with Japan army. Priest Thomas Barclay and Duncan Ferguson and 21 people went to negotiate with Japan Army Commander Nogi Maresuke on the night of Oct 20. The event is very critical in Taiwan history. The event happended in two villages which are opposite the Er-tsu-hai river : Tai-ye and Er-tsu-hai. In many stduies said Barclay and Nogi met in Er-tsu-hai village. But we don't think so. In this study, Priest Barclay and Ferguson met Japan vanguard commander, Major-General Yamaguchi Motomi in Er-tsu-hai Village. They met Japan army 2nd Division commander, Lieutenant General Nogi Maresuke in Su Yin-yuan house, Tai-ye Village. They made peace convention here.
