By investigating documents in Old Chinese, this paper offers a reinterpretation of a specific annotation in Guo Pu’s commentaries on the Erya, which states: “Southern people refer to jiǎndāo (翦刀, ‘scissors’) as jìdāo (劑刀)”. The study finds that the character 劑 (jì) already conveyed the meaning of ‘to cut or sever’ as early as the pre-Qin and Han periods. Although both 劑 (jì) and 翦 (jiǎn) can express meanings related to ‘cutting’ or ‘severing’, they lack an etymological relationship. 劑 (jì) originated from 齊 (qí/jì), not from 翦 (jiǎn).
Therefore, Guo Pu’s annotation should be interpreted as follows: in the Jin Dynasty, mainstream Chinese and Southern dialects employed distinct lexical items to refer to ‘scissors’. In other words, Guo Pu’s annotation does not provide evidence that the Southern dialects of the Jin Dynasty underwent phonological innovations (i.e., the raising of the main vowel and the loss of the nasal coda in the third division of the Yuan (元) rime group).
