Qian Mu had the habit of revising old manuscripts before republishing them, resulting in the complicated version situation of his works, as is particularly reflected in his works related to Song Xue. The revisions reveal turns in his thinking, the value of which unfortunately have not been fully appreciated. Consequently, the publication of The Complete Works of Mr. Qian Binsi does not entail the completion of the “thorough collation” of Qian Mu’s works. Continuing to sort out the variant texts between different versions of the same work is the key to promoting the “thorough collation,” as well as providing support for conducting incisive Qian Mu studies: Based on the variant texts of different versions, such an inquiry would outline the changes in Qian Mu’s thinking about Song Xue, unveil the reasons why Qian Mu’s Song Xue orientation shifted Wang Yangming to Zhu Xi, as well as the specific changes in his interpretations during the transformation process. It would also deepen our understanding of Qian Mu’s views on the history of Qing Xue, break the research model structured on the dispute between Han Xue and Song Xue, thus enabling a more comprehensive understanding of Qian Mu’s assessments of Dai Zhen and others Confucian scholars.
