Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of tinted spectacle lenses and tinted contact lenses (collectively referred to as tinted lenses) on human visual performance, and to analyze their potential benefits and limitations in sport-related contexts. Furthermore, this study sought to evaluate whether visual training performed while wearing tinted lenses may lead to changes in sports vision performance. Methods: A narrative review approach was adopted to identify studies published between 2000 and 2024. Literature was categorized based on lens optical mechanisms and sports-vision variables, and the relationships among lens tint, lighting conditions, and visual or athletic outcomes were synthesized. Results: Gray and black lenses reduce glare while maintaining natural color perception; yellow and amber lenses enhance contrast under low-light or foggy conditions; and brown and gray-green tints help stabilize visual performance during rapid light–dark transitions. Although tinted lenses can improve subjective visual comfort, their ability to enhance actual sports performance is limited, and dark tints may induce transient visual delay under abrupt illumination changes. Tinted contact lenses may further increase higher-order aberrations and reduce contrast sensitivity. Regarding ultraviolet and infrared radiation, tinted lenses do not inherently provide protective effects, and even polarized lenses—which effectively reduce glare and improve contrast—do not offer complete UV/IR protection. To ensure both visual quality and ocular safety during sports, lens design must integrate specialized UV/IR-blocking materials or coatings in addition to tint or polarization. Conclusion: Tinted lenses can improve visual comfort and enhance contrast but their effects on UV/IR protection and sports performance are limited.) Future research could investigate the effects of visual training using differently tinted lenses on dynamic visual acuity, visual reaction, and hand–eye coordination, in order to establish more evidence-based strategies for sports vision training.
