廈門話中有成音節輔音 ŋ。這 ŋ 音跟 p、t、k 等輔音構成音節時，具有類似 ə 的音。羅常培先生等研究廈門話的人都認為是個過渡音。如果 pŋ、tŋ、kŋ 中出現類似 ə 的音，那麼這元音不太可能是過渡音而是音素，是音節核心。因此，個人對這類似 ə 的元音以及它在廈門話音韻系統中的地位加以討論。

　　It is generally believed that there is a syllabic consonant ‘ŋ’ in the Xiamen dialect. When some consonants (p, t, k etc) are connected with ‘ŋ’, vowel ‘ə’ will appear between them. Luo Changpei thinks that this ‘ə’ is a glide. I think this ‘ə’ is not a glide, but is a nuclear syllable.
