The author teaches Japanese literature courses at the Department of Japanese Language and Literature at their university. These courses aim to enhance students' critical thinking and imagination, encouraging them to develop the ability to ask questions, reflect on the lives of literary characters, and form their own opinions. The lectures focus on improving reading comprehension and critical thinking skills through intensive reading of modern and contemporary Japanese literary works, particularly novels. For instance, since the fall semester of 2021, an instructional approach was introduced to cultivate students' "logical thinking skills" and "computational thinking" through the production of a novel game based on Dazai Osamu's Run, Melos!. Furthermore, in the fall semester of 2024, a course was designed using Akutagawa Ryunosuke's Rashōmon, with a focus on developing logical thinking skills. In addition, the course incorporated the use of mind maps to analyze literary texts while drawing connections to contemporary works popular among young people, such as Isayama Hajime’s Attack on Titan, integrating themes from ethics, philosophy, and theories of justice. Through this approach, students engaged in collaborative learning and discussions, and they were encouraged to submit concrete examples as "learning outcomes" to reinforce the link between theory and practice. This presentation reports on the newly implemented attempts to cultivate logical thinking skills in Japanese literature courses and examines the results of these practices.
