Akutagawa Ryūnosuke is a writer known for his meticulous construction of narrative elements, including characters, time, setting, and even props. By consciously describing the spatial settings of his works, he attempts to express each story’s theme more effectively—either through named or unnamed techniques. The spaces Akutagawa depicts are not abstract concepts, but rather “experienced spaces” imbued with unique meaning by the author himself, functioning as representations of his inner world within the narrative. In the short story ‘The Garden’, the depicted space functions as one in which the flow of time appears to be suspended. During the repeated process of the younger son demolishing and rebuilding the house, time and space are simultaneously experienced. However, what the reader perceives is only the cycle of demolition and reconstruction—the passage of time itself remains intangible both visually and physically. Previous studies on ‘The Garden’ have tended to focus on the struggles and decline experienced by the Nakamura family’s male members within this space. In contrast, the women of the Nakamura household are often relegated to the margins of the garden and treated as forgotten presences. This paper shifts the focus to those women—who have long remained in the depths of the garden yet gone unacknowledged—and explores how, amid the decline of the men, they quietly radiate a unique brilliance and come to bear the role of cultural inheritors. By doing so, this study aims to reconsider the role of women in cultural transmission and illuminate the deeper meanings embedded within the narrative space of The Garden.
