“Haguruma” (The Cogwheels) is a failed ‘ final work ’ that is simultaneously a true‘final work’. This is because it is a work left behind by an author with the will to die, despite the unsuccessful suicide attempt. For a person who chooses to end their life by their own will, their‘final work’contains a heavier meaning than a‘final work’that is simply designated as the last piece. Indeed, “Haguruma” was carefully created with all of Akutagawa’s talent and nerves poured into it. The evidence lies in the fact that the text “Haguruma” can be decoded through various codes: “resort and city,” “Westernmodern culture and Eastern classics,” “Christianity and Greek mythology,” and furthermore “light and darkness,” “red, green, yellow,” “white and black,” “wingsand Erinyes‘the Furies’,” “consciousness and unconsciousness,” among other ciphers and correspondences. These parts are intricately intertwined. Moreover, it takes the form of a‘hotel novel’,‘modern urban novel’, and ‘modern urban wandering novel’. Therefore, its literary world became a precursor to modernist literature. The decoding of “Haguruma” is not straightforward. For this reason, the gravitational pull and charm of its world are sharp and penetrating. This paper attempts to decode “Haguruma” through the code of ‘Christianity and Greek mythology’, focusing on elements such as‘wings’,‘Erinyes, the Furies’, and ‘red, green, yellow, white and black’. Furthermore, we aim to approach the world that Akutagawa reached in his final years.
