This paper presents seventeen philological interpretations of the inscriptions collected in Qiántáng Cáng Eastern Zhou Chime-stone Inscriptions. The proposed interpretations may be classified into four categories. First, the “Lishi sui” (Year of Official Service) category, as seen in examples such as “Chen Ji lishi sui jìdōng,” indicates that “lishi sui” was a calendrical formula commonly used in the state of Qi, with the personal names and dates in the inscriptions serving as crucial chronological markers. Second, the musical terminology category, including scale names such as “Dàlǚ shǎo (xiǎo) sì” and “wángshè,” reflects specialized technical terms for musical nomenclature in Qi during the Warring States period. Third, the stems-and-branches numbering category, exemplified by cases such as “Xiàzǐ” and “Xū,” shows that the chime-stones were arranged according to the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches system. Fourth, the numerals category—e.g., “twelve” and “seventy-three”—illustrates the forms in which numbers appear in ancient script materials. Despite the severe fragmentation of the chime-stone inscriptions recorded in the original volume, these materials remain of considerable value for the study of Warring States Qi-script paleography and the structural organization of chime-stone sets.
