The origin of the character hu(互) traditionally has two main theories: one suggesting its derivation from ya(牙) and the other from ju(巨). Based on the distinctive form found in the Wuyi guangchang Eastern Han bamboo slips—where it used as hu(互) (mutual) and also as hu(䇘) (a type of tool)—it can be concluded that the theory of its derivation from ju(巨) is correct. The term ju-ci(巨刺) found in received medical texts is actually hu-ci(巨刺), representing a vestige of earlier writing habits and character forms. In light of this new understanding, a few graphs in excavated texts that were previously transcribed as ju(巨) (reading ju[矩] or ju[拒]) can now be recognized as hu(互) (reading hu[互] or hu[枑]).
