This paper aims to re-examine Wang Jingwei’s theory of “Sino-Japanese cooperation.” Setting aside the moral judgments imposed after the war, it tries to analyze the deeper logic behind his political choices from the perspectives of intellectual history and foreign policy. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Wang’s collaboration with Japan was not an act of expediency but rather an extension of a system of thought that he had begun constructing since his youth. Influenced by the Meiji Restoration and Yangming School of thought during his studies in Japan, and later turning toward “Human Coexistence Theory” after the Paris Peace Conference, Wang advocated Sino-Japanese mutual assistance in order to resist Western imperialism. Wang inherited and transformed Sun Yat-sen’s “Pan-Asianism,” believing that China and Japan, as nations of “shared language and race,” should cooperate under the principle of mutual assistance in building a peaceful East Asian order. He attempted to steer Japan’s proposed “New Order in East Asia” toward a path of equality and reciprocity, promoting the ideal of “saving the nation through peace” by way of institutionalized propaganda and policy implementation. However, the Wang regime he established during the war was constrained by the Japanese military, and the gap between ideal and reality led to the failure of his peace efforts. Through an analysis of Wang Jingwei’s intellectual development, political practice, and interpretation of Sun Yat-sen’s thought, this article reveals the roots and historical significance of his “Sino-Japanese cooperation” theory. Wang was both a product and a maker of history, and the tension between his ideas and actions provides a critical lens for understanding modern Chinese diplomatic concepts and the possibility of reconstructing East Asian order. This study seeks to offer a more objective and nuanced historical perspective on Wang Jingwei’s choices under extreme circumstances.
