所謂「族群歷史研究」，過去的「常」往往是「民族溯源式」、「漢文化中心主義」與含糊的靜態「融合說」；但是，歷史學無法迴避近代世界族群問題的挑戰。歷史學如何因應類似平埔族這般台灣史上的特殊歷史角色？並且站在史學立場研究與詮釋？本文即以五十年來（1945-1995）台灣平埔族群研究的成果與內涵，做爲解析台灣史發展過程的個例；並觀照「平埔研究」做爲一個學術範疇，是否能夠以史學爲主體，兼含人類學的族群理論，發展史學的、無文字民族之族群史研究。本文繼而以西方人類學界所討論的「民族史」議題，做爲反省族群歷史研究的借鏡，並透過平埔研究中傳統史學與社會人類學合流的現象，試圖找到歷史研究的策略。歷史學在族群研究的範疇中，如何清理資料的族群偏見、擺脫習而不察的我族中心觀，面對人類學者所提出的質疑，並建構出以史學爲主體的研究方法與方法論，是本文主要的關心。

The historical studies of ethnic group used to "be" focused on the ethnogenesis, Han-cultural ethnocentrism, and the vague and static fusionism as well; but how can it play the right role in dealing with ethnic problems in the modern world, especially the one of the P'ingpu Studies in Taiwan history. This article tries to analyse the development of Taiwan history through the case of P'ingpu Studies with its abundant researches since 1945. Furthermore, to develop P'ingpu Studies as one of the intellectual research fields, we can go on this ethnic group studies in our time, which basically being a history, but embracing some essences from ethnic group theory of anthropology. I am also trying to find out the methods and methodology of the historical studies of ethnic group with two aspects. One is the agenda of "ethnohistory" which has been discussed in Western anthropology for years. The other one is to follow the achievements that combine traditional history and social anthropology in P'ingpu Studies. Besides all these purposes bearing in my mind, I wish to clarify much ethnic prejudice in the historical material we used to read, and exclude the ethnocentrism which undermines our ethnic group studies very much.
