A common aspect of Taiwanese folkbelief is a blending of the three traditional religions, that is, a coexistence of deities belonging to these religions. Temples in general tend to worship Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist deities at the same time. It is the aim of this paper to explain the common phenomenon of the "unity of the three creeds," in the light of he Diagram of Divinities obtained through fieldwork, discussing the examples of eight temples in the Chungho area. Deities of different temples interlock: when a deity is central in a first temple, it may be subordinate in a second. Taoist temples worship Confucian and Buddhist deities; Confucian temples Buddhist and Taoist; Buddhist temples have Taoist and Confucian divinities. The phenomenon explains somewhat how in Taiwanese traditional folkbelief, the three religions have generally lost their original features, in spite of the existing distinction between Buddhist, Confucian, Taoist, and other groups. This has given rise to the growth of one, large, unitary folkbelief, which is one of the important characteristics of Taiwanese folkbelief.
