Feng Fang (ca. 1500-1570) was described by his contemporaries as a "daring fool." He was famous for forging a text Ink Rubbing of the Stone-Inscribed Great Learning (Shih-ching Ta-hsüeh), which was related to a major controversy between Chu Hsi's "New Version" of the Great Learning and Wang Yang-ming's "Ancient Version." Owing to the scarcity of early historical sources of the Great Learning, no scholar had been able to solve this problem convincingly. Feng Fang, an unsuccessful official, announced that he found an ink rubbing of a stone inscribed with the Great Learning. In fact it is a fake, and Feng Fang hoped to impress his contemporaries by solving a long debated case. The text he forged clearly undermined the reliability of both Chu's and Wang's versions. However, the forged text was almost identical to the "Ancient Version," thus less damaging to Wang Yang-ming. This essay also discusses new battles generated by Feng's forged text. Expectations and interpretations were diverse. Scholars interpreted this text all according to their intellectual inclinations.
