Chang Liang-Sung (1933-2024) was born in Fenglin Town, Hualien County, to a family of Hakka origin from Daxi, Taoyuan. His family moved to Hualien during the Japanese colonial era due to his father's assignment in the police force, and they have resided there ever since. After graduating from Hualien Agricultural School in 1952, Chang entered the Forestry Products Management Bureau in 1955, dedicating himself to forestry administration and management in Taitung. He worked at the bureau's stations in Chenggong, Zhiben, and Dawu until his retirement in 1997, gaining deep insights into the local development of forestry.
In the late 1950s, with the support of American aid, the bureau focused on converting Taiwan's broadleaf forests into railway sleepers for export to Korea, thereby earning foreign exchange. Chang was one of the key fi gures in this initiative in the Taitung region. From the 1960s to the mid-1970s, the Forestry Bureau, which evolved from the Forestry Products Management Bureau, launched the "Timber Stand Conversion" project with support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. This project aimed to transform Taiwan's natural broadleaf forests into uniform plantations, and Chang played a significant role in it. After retiring, he collaborated with reforestation contractors to undertake government reforestation projects.
Chang, who passed away last year, devoted his entire life to forestry. His oral records provide invaluable insights into local forestry practices and the lives of forestry workers, filling in details not found in forestry archives. These accounts are precious resources for social and environmental history.
