Purpose: To investigate disparities in the use and effectiveness of back-row attacks among the top four teams (Thailand, China, Japan, Vietnam) and the Chinese Taipei team in the 2023 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship. Methods: Video recordings of matches were analyzed using Nacsport software to document the back-row attack routes (Zones 1, 6, 5), attack numbers, and points scored. Statistical analyses were conducted using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test to compare differences in back-row attacks between winning and losing sets and the Kruskal-Wallis H test to assess differences in back-row attacks across different countries. Results: When comparing winning and losing sets, only Japan’s back-row attacks in Zone 6 exhibited a significant difference in scoring rate (p < .05, Z = -2.27), while other countries showed no significant variations in scoring rates or utilization rates for back-row attacks. Noteworthy differences (p < .05) in the utilization rates of back-row attacks were observed among countries in winning sets. Chinese Taipei had a higher utilization rate in Zone 1 compared to Japan; Japan had a significantly higher utilization rate in Zone 6 compared to Thailand; and in Zone 5, Japan and China had notably lower utilization rates compared to Chinese Taipei, although there were no significant differences in the number of points scored or scoring efficiency. In the losing sets, significant differences (p < .05) in utilization rates were only observed in Zone 1, where Thailand had a higher utilization rate compared to Vietnam. Conclusion: The analysis of back-row attack strategies among the top four teams in the Asian Championship, including Chinese Taipei, reveals that all teams have integrated back-row attacks into their offensive strategies. However, except for Japan, the impact of back-row attacks on match outcomes is not significant for the other teams. Therefore, enhancing players' fundamental skills and improving overall tactical coordination to enhance scoring efficiency will be crucial for coaches in the future development of back-row attacks and other strategies.
