This study examines the effects of gender and sex roles on attitudes toward date rape among adolescents in Taiwan by employing a purposive-stratified sampling method. Data were collected in mid 1997 from 2970 senior high and college students. Compared with American literature on date rape attitudes, Chinese adolescents are more forgiving toward date rape, particularly situations involving a woman's non-resistance or when a woman behaves in a provocative manner. Gender, sex role attitudes, and date rape awareness/experience affects adolescent attitudes toward date rape. For male adolescents, date rape risk awareness and experience predict forgiving attitudes towards date rape, while for female adolescents, the best predictors seem to be sex role attitudes. Possible explanations to these findings and educational implications for date rape prevention are discussed.
