建築無史，史自人出，要了解一本建築的歷史著作，宜先了解作者的思想觀點及其史學進徑。本文將以風行一時的佩夫斯納的名著《歐洲建築史綱》為例，說明作者如何基於黑格爾思想系統的觀點，建構其描述系統，將汗牛充棟的歐洲建築史料，生動活潑而戲劇性十足地簡潔舖陳其歷史演變。 本文首先將討論黑格爾思想系統的藝術史學觀點，包括風格、形式意志、天才、時代精神、藝術自主性、歷史集體性、歷史辯證邏輯等。接著分析佩夫斯納如何運用上述觀點，呈現在《歐洲建築史綱》的全書行文架構，以詮釋歐洲建築發展的歷史演變。 末了，本文將基於上述分析，討論黑格爾系的建築（藝術）史學的進徑的時空定位、學術價值以及其適用範圍與侷限。

To properly understand any work on the history of architecture, it is necessary to grasp the theoretical basis and approach of the author. To this end, this article examines Nikolaus Pevsner’s An Outline of European Architecture to show how Pevsner employed Hegelian thinking when selecting materials from the architecture archives in Europe and how he arranged these materials into such a concise, vivid, and dramatic story. Key concepts of Hegelian thinking, including style, Kunstwollen, genius, Zeitgeist, artistic autonomy, historical collectivism, and historical dialectics are first identified. The way in which concepts were applied by Pevsner to formulate the structure of his book is then analyzed. Finally, the role Hegelian thinking has played in architectural historiography in general, as well as its values and limits, are also reviewed.
