Background and Purpose. The Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) is a recognized tool for evaluating the quality of jump-landing movements. Its application in gender-specific biomechanical analysis remains relatively sparse in the literature. This study aimed to quantitatively assess the two-dimensional lower limb range of motion using LESS in male and female athletes. Methods. Fifty-four athletes (27 males, 27 females) performed jump-landing while filmed from the frontal and sagittal plane of the participants with two home cameras. One researcher manually scored videos using LESS criteria and employed KINOVEA software for quantitively measurement of range of motion, displacement distances, overall displacement, joint displacement on hip, knee, and ankle at initial contact and maximal knee flexion. The independent samples t test was used to analyze the gender differences. Results. In the frontal plane at initial contact, males exhibited significantly larger external rotation in both feet positions compared to females (p < .05). No significant differences were observed in sagittal plane parameters (p > .05). At maximal knee flexion, males demonstrated significantly greater knee varus angles bilaterally compared to females (p < .05). Males also displayed larger external rotation of both feet positions than females (p < .05). Male athletes had significantly greater overall displacement than females (p < .05). Ankle joint displacement was notably greater in males compared to females (p = .04). There were no significant differences in LESS manual scoring scores between genders (p > .05). Conclusion. This study utilized quantitative, two-dimensional joint angle measurements through LESS to discern gender-specific biomechanical differences in healthy athletes during jump-landings. Males exhibited greater external rotation of the feet and overall displacement, indicating potentially distinct landing strategies compared to females.
