傳統的校史書寫，總是不脫「學校規模與架構的發展」、「典章制度的沿革」、「人事的滄桑與變遷」、「教師或學生的憶往與思來」、「校地的變化與遷徙」等課題，只是互有輕重、詳略不一罷了。晚近的若干校史或紀念特刊，開始呈現出新風貌，校園中的「小人物」、校園設計的理念形成與實踐的過程、草木蟲魚……等，都被納入校史書寫範疇中，在傳統校史範疇之外，豐富了學校歷史的內涵。 校史書寫結構的確立，表明了每個敘事者對學校歷史的認識方式。學校的歷史應該以學校為主體，「不多也不少」。不能因為政治權力、族群認同、意識型態或其他任何外在於「學校自身」的理由而腰斬或虛增。 但是，「學校自身」又該如何定位呢？本文中我以「舞臺劇」譬喻成大的歷史。「舞臺」本身是地理空間；舞臺上的「搭景」是生態環境；舞臺上的「陳設」是建築；舞臺上的「演員」，包括主角、配角與龍套，進進出出，都是劇中的成員。簡單地說，我以為一部校史的敘事，「理論上」應包括完整的舞臺劇，因此，像成大這樣幾經滄桑的大學，學校的歷史，不只是「大學自身」的歷史而已。我會這麼想的理由其實很簡單，就是「成大不能獨佔它『今天』所擁有版圖的歷史記憶。」 學院中的歷史學者，應該把學校的歷史當作駐在的「田野」，而一個偉大的歷史學者，「必須」能書寫自我當下的歷史。

Historians work in universities, but they seldom take university history as the topic of their research. This paper discusses narrative viewpoints about university history based on my experience writing about the history of National Cheng Kung University. I think that the narrative for university history should resemble a performance in the theatre. All the actors and scenery organize a drama. Historians can’t ignore any actor who has participated in this drama, because they gather the whole history of the university. Writing university history is like “field work” for historians who are working in the university. A great historian must be the narrator of his age, and historian’s narratives are always contemporary with their own stories.
