江戶時代的日本漢方醫學發展到了空前繁榮的階段，而森立之則其集大成者。森立之出身世醫之家，先後師從伊澤蘭軒、多紀元堅等知名學者，打下訓詁考據和醫學的堅實功底。青年時代的森立之被流放到相模長達十二年，在那裏與農夫獵戶以及當地的醫生打成一片，汲取了豐富的思想營養，鍛鍊出精湛的醫療技術。他踏勘山石林泉，觀察藥用動植礦物，為爾後的學術生涯積累了寶貴資料。遇赦後回到江戶（今東京）從事漢學和醫學文獻的研究與教學工作，先後完成了《傷寒論攷注》、《金匱要略攷注》、《本草經攷注》、《素問攷注》等考注系列著作，從文字校勘、詞語訓釋、名物考證、臨床實踐諸方面對中醫經典進行綜合梳理論證，廣泛採納了中國歷代醫家和清代樸學家的見解和方法，全面繼承了日本傑出漢方醫學家的研究成果，糾正了許多傳承已久的謬誤，創立了一些發人深思的新說，達到了日本漢方醫學的巔峰。完成了中國傳統醫學的日本本土化的宏偉事業。

Chinese medicine in 19th century Japan culminated in the career of Mori Tachiyuki（森立之）, who came from a long line of physicians. He followed such famous scholars as Izawa Rangen（伊澤蘭軒） , and Taki Motokata（多紀元堅） to learn philology, phonology, textual research and medicine. When he was young he was banished to Sagami（相模） for 12 years, where he identified himself with farmers, hunters and local folk physicians, accumulated plenty of rich experiences and made on-the-spot observations and studies of medicinal plants, animals and minerals. After returning to Tokyo, he was long engaged in the studies of Han Learning and medical literature, and teaching. He compiled such books as “Notes to Treatise on Febrile Diseases”（ 傷寒論攷注） , “Notes to Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber”（金匱要略攷注） , “Notes to Shen Nong’s Herbal”（本草經攷注） , “Notes to PIain Questions”（素問攷注）and “A series of Notes to Zhi Yuan”（枳園叢攷）. He widely applied the ideas and methods of Chinese physicians of past dynasties and the evidential studies scholars of the Qing Dynasty, while inheriting the research achievements made by outstanding Japanese specialists in medicine, and corrected literal mistakes and misunderstandings which had spread for a long time. He also completed the Japanization of traditional Chinese medicine.
