《集韻》標注「唐武后作」或「唐武后改作」的文字共有十八個字，將這些文字與其他的字書、唐代的墓誌銘等資料比對，發現其來源可分為四大類，一、以前有所承的文字為新字，如地（埊）、日（𡆠）、國（圀）；二、據已有的文字變易或增減筆畫為新字，如天（□）、曐（○）、正（□）、月（囝）；三、新造的文字，如初（□）、臣（𢘑）、人（𤯔）、君（𠁈）、秊（□）、載（□）、照（曌）、聖（𨲢）、證（□）、授（□）；四、誤識為新造的文字，如生（𠥱）。其字形與墓誌銘的文字相符者，僅為地（埊）、日（𡆠）、國（圀）、正（□）、天（□）、曐（○）、臣（𢘑）、人（𤯔）、秊（□）、載（□）、聖（𨲢）、授（□）等十二字。又「新造的文字」中，因筆畫繁複或偏旁複雜，多數的字書或是相關文獻載錄的文字多有訛誤。

In Ji Yun, there are 18 characters marked as "created by Empress Wu of the Tang Dynasty" or "altered by Empress Wu of the Tang Dynasty." While comparing these characters with other dictionaries, epitaphs of the Tang Dynasty, it is found that their origins can be divided into four categories: 1. The new characters inherited from the past, such as 地(埊)、日(𡆠)、國(圀); 2. Change, increase or decrease the strokes on the basis of existing characters to create new characters, such as 天(□)、曐(○)、正(□)、月(囝); 3. New characters, such as 初(□)、臣(𢘑)、人(𤯔)、君(𠁈)、秊(□)、載(□)、照(曌)、聖(𨲢)、證(□)、授(□); 4. Characters that are misread as new characters, such as 生(𠥱). The twelve characters with a similar glyph to the epitaph are 地(埊)、日(𡆠)、國(圀)、正(□)、天(□)、曐(○)、臣(𢘑)、人(𤯔)、秊(□)、載(□)、聖(𨲢)、授(□). In addition, due to the complicated strokes or radicals of the newly created characters, many characters recorded in the books or related documents are erroneous.
