This study of The Night Banquet of Han Xizai reconsiders its date, place of production, and authorship; analyzes the residential space depicted in the painting in relation to mortuary depictions of afterlife residences; discusses the textual record of the theme and the painting’s relationship to anecdotal literature of the early Northern Song period; and proposes a new interpretation of the painting’s visual strategies and purpose.
