This paper examines the life of Dr. Miyahara Takekuma throughout his nearly 20 years of stay in Taichung during the Japanese occupation period, and his contributions to the local society through the study of historical records. During the 1920s, Taichung was a rapidly growing city that was slowly becoming one of the major urban centers in central Taiwan. This attracted many Japanese citizens to immigrate to the city. Among them was Dr. Miyahara Takekuma, who would go on to open an eye clinic in Taichung, and would eventually become one of the most prestigious doctors of his time. Born as a Shizoku of Kagoshima Prefecture, Dr. Miyahara not only received education in Germany, but also held an MD-PhD from the Tokyo Imperial University. One would assume that a man with such accomplishments would choose to pursue his career in highly developed places like Europe or even Japan, yet Taiwan turned out to be the ideal place for him to settle down due to its climate, as well as its very underdevelopment. To begin with, Taiwan has a warm subtropical climate that facilitates the spread of various diseases, which was ideal for a pathologist like Dr. Miyahara to carry out their research. He was also a specialist in ophthalmology, and the relatively undeveloped healthcare system of Taichung provided an excellent opportunity for his career, as there was a huge demand for eye specialists in the city. These were the main reasons behind Dr. Miyahara’s immigration to Taichung. However, his contributions towards the local society didn’t stop at the medical field. In fact, he was also fairly active in local politics. He was a member of the Taichung Prefecture Assembly and the Taichung Prefecture Consultative Council, and had founded the East Asia Co-Prosperity Association along with political activists such as Lin Hsien-Tang and Chen Hsin, advocating for the assimilation of Taiwan into the Japanese Empire, the development of Asian countries in general, as well as world peace. Being a visionary himself, Dr Miyahara followed international affairs closely, and would not hesitate to provide his thoughts and suggestions should the laws and systems showed any room for improvement. We can see that he was an honorable individual with a strong sense of responsibility towards the society.
