本文討論大統百貨存在於高雄的20年裡，對於城市所造成之影響。大統百貨於1975年開幕，在初代董事長吳耀庭的遠見和理念下，它有著當年臺灣最好的服務和設施，因此成為1970年代全臺最大也最受歡迎的百貨公司。其吸引人的設施和「東南亞最大的百貨公司」的稱號吸引了大量外地遊客，讓大統成為來到高雄必遊的「觀光景點」。然而，因為大統在高雄百貨業的強勢地位，讓它被冠上「南霸天」的稱號，也成了同業來到高雄拓展市場的一堵高牆。而對高雄市民來說，它是文化設施也是休閒娛樂中心，是陪伴許多人成長的「童年回憶」，也因此形成所謂的「大統世代」。又由於大統形象相當良好，人們也將它視為能夠代表高雄的「地標」。此外，被大統吸引而來的消費人潮，不但讓新興區玉衡里和振成里成為鬧區，形成知名的「大統商圈」，還讓部分人士認為大統能夠帶來商機，遂將其視為「財富的象徵」。要之，因為大統百貨對高雄之經濟、市民生活、區域環境的影響，使其在市民的心中留下佔有一定的地位。

This paper examines the impact of President Department Store on Kaohsiung during its two-decade presence, from 1975 to 1995. Opened in 1975 under the visionary leadership of its founding chairman, Wu Yao-Ting( 吳耀庭 ), President Department Store boasted unparalleled service and facilities in Taiwan, becoming the largest and most popular department store nationwide throughout the 1970s. Its attractive features and the title of "Southeast Asia's Largest Department Store" attracted countless tourists, establishing it as a must-see "tourist attraction" in Kaohsiung. However, its dominance in Kaohsiung's retail industry earned it the nickname "Southern Hegemon( 南霸天 )," effectively hindering competition from entering the market. For Kaohsiung residents, it served as a cultural hub and a leisure center, becoming a cherished "childhood memory" for many and fostering a sense of collective identity – the "President Generation." Moreover, due to its positive image, President Department Store was widely regarded as a symbolic "landmark" representing Kaohsiung. The influx of shoppers drawn to the store transformed the Yuheng Vil( 玉衡里 ) and Zhencheng Vil( 振成里 ) neighborhoods of XinxingDistrict( 新興區 ) into bustling commercial areas, forming the renowned " President Commercial District." Some even viewed the department store as a "symbol of prosperity," believing it brought economic opportunities. In conclusion, President Department Store's significant influence on Kaohsiung's economy, citizens' lives, and the urban environment has secured its lasting place in the hearts of its people.
