2014 年，基德勒文集的編委會拜訪了他在柏林洪堡大學的辦公室，討論如何將他多達300 篇的短文組織分類成十卷本的文集。基德勒生前曾要求將之按主題進行編輯，如文學、媒介、哲學、戰爭等；可編委會成員卻一致反對，認為許多文章的確切領域難以界定，將它們歸於任何特定的領域都會違背編輯的中立原則（Winthrop-Young 著、農鬱譯，2016）。《留聲機、電影、打字機》這部專著就具有典型的基式混搭風格，小說、詩歌、書信、論文等等無不為其所用，成為他「媒介理論」的註腳。
