西方新聞業自上個世紀90 年代以來，產業內外即充滿困惑與焦慮的氣氛。此種困惑與焦慮一方面來自於既存新聞產業是否還有明天的徬徨，另方面則來自於傳統專業意理（ideology of professionalism）能否繼續適用的懷疑，其中尤以後者牽涉新聞工作者的實際操作與社會地位，並關乎新聞業的存在價值與社會功能，備受各界關注。
