本文旨在敘述北宋蕃兵變遷情形，其發展過程可以分成三個階段。立國之初，基於羈縻蕃部及國防需要，就有蕃兵存在。仁宗中葉宋夏戰爭時期，政府為鞏固邊防，大力整頓蕃兵。迄至神宗以後，宋人對於西北地區採取積極經營策略，由於蕃兵戰鬥力較強，復加熟毸蕃情及地理環境，逐漸茁壯，成為北宋後期主要武力之一。

This article focuses on the development of the tribal army during Northern Sung. The process of the tribal army is divided into three stages. During the early period, Northern Sung took conciliatory policy toward the tribes and the tribal army was established by Sung's government. During the middle period, not until the war between Northern sung and His Hsia in jen tzung's (仁宗) time had Northern Sung reorganized tribal army. During the late period, Northern Sung dynasty expanded its border. At that moment, the tribal army gradually became an important military force.
