人類系統的傳播研究從何時開始？至少可以追溯至古希臘時代。 雖然古希臘人早在公元前23 世紀便已開始活動，但史家所謂「古希臘時期」大約是從公元前800 年左右算起，那時古希臘人開始向外殖民，在地中海周邊建立了數以百計的「城邦」（polis/city-state）。
