1939 年的秋天，語藝學者 Richard Weaver 在結束暑假，開車返回他已經任教兩年的德州農業機械學院（Alabama Polytechnic Institute）途中，他忽然覺得他不一定要回到那個令他厭惡的環境。在那個理工與科技掛帥的學校裡，「我面對的是蔓延的實利主義（philistinism），崇拜科技、大規模組織、以成功為人生目的。在此我被迫看到應用科學和人文學科如同獅子與綿羊無法和平共處；除非有強悍的秩序維護者，獅子將要吞噬綿羊」（Foss, Foss, & Trapp, 1991 ／林靜伶譯，1996：60）。
