During the Qing Dynasty, the shallow mountainous areas of Taoyuan and Hsinchu were still the hunting grounds and territoriesof the aboriginal Atayal Tribe. The geographical location was near the traditional territory of the Atayal people, thus there were many experiences and memories of marriage between the Hakka and Atayal families there since the Qing Dynasty. This paper examines the records of the interaction of the indigenous peopleand the Han Chinese from the Qing Dynasty to the early period of Japanese rule through relevant historical records field materials, as well as oral accounts of elders documented in the author's visits to the Hakka and the Atayal villages in Taoyuan and Hsinchu. I argue that the marriage and adoption relationships between the the two groups in the border areas are actually neglected under the mainstream discourse of Han Chinese reclamation history. To the local people both sides, the memoreis of community interaction, which have been passed down in the folk societies, are different from the connotations of ethnic policy, such as strong demarcation, separation and prohibition, manifesting in general archival literatures in of the past. To the elderly of the local communities the "intermarriage" demonstrates the interest calculation of the both sides in the trading relations of mountain and forest development , whereas "adoption" represents the mutual integration between the two groups in the process of the Atayal people’s crossing the borderline, going headhunting, and taking the Han infants back. Both situations, meaningful in the context of social memory, highlight the diversity and complexity of human interactions.
