In the beginning of the Japanese colonial era, the Han soldiers who were scattered following the defeat in Itsubi Senso (Yiwei War) joined forces with the “bandits” who had previously concealed themselves in the inland mountains during the Qing Dynasty, which became a multifaceted military entity. On one hand, these “bandits” persistently harassment the local inhabitants near the mountainous regions, they also aligning themselves with the cause of anti-Japanese nationalism. Under Kodama Gentaro’s “Penalization of Bandits” policy in 1898, they did not disappear; instead, they withdrew to the inner mountains and established an alliance with the Atayal Topa Tribe, resulting in the unique alliance between the Han Chinese and the indigenous people. This article centers on the Japanese efforts to combat “bandits” in the Sann-kak-íng (Sam-kiap-khu) and Amm-Kheng in the beginning of Japanese colonial rule. Additionally, it examines the “Takoham Bandit Harassment” in 1907, as referred to by the Japanese, which took place along the Jatian Mountain Pass Line. This article examines the process by which the “bandits” repeatedly migrated to the territory of the Topa Tribe during a specific historical period. It also investigates instances where these bandits formed alliances with the indigenous people to resist the Japanese forces together, drawing upon various sources such as literature, oral testimonies, and on-site investigations. Additionally, it examines the patterns of interaction and factors that are associated with them. This article mainly focuses on different spheres such as ethnic interaction, economic relations and geographical relations, and further compares the differences interactions between "bandits" with the Topa Tribe and the M'utu Tribe.
