The history of Buddhist exchange in East Asia is an important aspect in the history of East Asian cultural development, and Taiwan Buddhism during the Japanese rule period was a stage of transition to modernity, the encounter between Taiwan Buddhism and Japanese Buddhism during that period is naturally one of the key aspects of the history of East Asian Buddhism. From 1896 to 1900, two important monks of Japanese Sōto Sect, Riku Etsugan and Inoue Shuten, devoted themselves to preaching and teaching in Taiwan. Riku was in charge of missionary work of Greater Tainan, established the Mandarin School, organized the Tainan Women's Association, formed the Biyan Association, presided over the retreats, etc. He promoted cultural and educational work, taught Zen Buddhism, and written theses on Zen Buddhism. Because of his high moral standing and strong persuasive power, the results were remarkable. In addition to participating in Riku's missionary work, Inoue, after returning to Japan with Riku, he came back to Tainan in 1902 and devoted himself to the establishment of a free school for the benefit of the local community. Inoue's approach to Zen was not limited to the Sōto Zen, but he revealed his free and open orientation and debated with D. T. Suzuki of Rinzai School, demonstrating his Zen perspective.
