The two characters nian 𡰫𡰫 and wo 𥄗𥄗 share the same phonetic component that can be traced back to the form seen in oracle bones. I suggest that this form originally depicted the act of rubbing two round balls in a hand and was the pictographic protoform of both the words ruo 挼/撋/㨎 and wan 丸. The phonetic component of the character juan 卷 (i.e. ) also closely related to the in terms of graphic form, sound and meaning. The protoform of the charachter lao /勞, written as , takes as its phonetic component. The component (a garment with dots) was created to depict the word liao 撩/繚 meaning "to sew perfunctorily." The forms (the protoform for ruo 挼 / 撋 / 㨎 ), (the protoform for liao 撩/繚), and (the protoform for na 拏/拿) were all created for the oral vocabulary words in archaic Chinese, and therefore can be used to illustrate each other.
