In ancient China, bronze vessels were often divided into square and round shapes. When naming bronze vessels in later times, the word “square方” was often added to the vessel name to distinguish the shape of the vessel. This article summarizes several self-named square bronzes, combining two bronzes that have been examined by scholars: the Shiqiu Fang Ding (史逑方鼎) and the Bo Ding(柏 鼎), as well as the Wan Fang Yan(綰方 )and the Ge Gong Ding (格公鼎),both of which have been published in recent years. The origin of these words is that they are all derived from the word fang (方), fang (鈁), pang (旁), which means square. At the same time, this paper also examines the inscriptions of the Ge Gong Ding (格公鼎). In addition to the phenomena mentioned above, some of the ancient square bronzes called “Fu簠” and some of the self-named inscriptions include the fang (匚) part, which also retains traces of the markings of square vessels.
