There were many discrepancies in its interpretations for the word chushi in the “Huang Men” (“The August Gate”) passage of the Tsinghua Manuscripts. The transcription and publication of “Si Gao” (“The Four Prayers”) are of great help for analyzing its exact meaning. In fact, the word “ 事” is supposed to be interpreted as chushi. The chushi were given importance by the rulers because of their noble morality and outstanding talent, though they were not appointed as officials. The publication of “Huang Men” and “Si Gao” provided further evidence for understanding the status and function of chushi in the Western Zhou period.
