Some characters on the Youzhou Shuzuo Qin Jun Stone Pillar are difficult to recognize as a result of weathering, which has led to the problems in the transcription and interpretation of the inscriptions. This paper first reexamines the rubbings and images of the inscriptions, pointing out that several graphs were mistranscribed. The paper argues, for instance, that the two graphs transcribed as mo(莫)and shu(贖) should be identified as song(送)and zhong(終)respectively. Based on the revised transcription and relevant traditional literature, the paper then provides a new explanation for four phrases. For example, the phrase “even if hundreds of people die, the person cannot be revived(百身莫贖)” was misinterpreted in the past, which should be recorrected as “to hold a funeral ritually(□禮送終)”. In addition, through the new interpretation of the inscriptions, the paper indicates that the filial duty concept in Confucianism has a profound effect on the burial culture of Han Dynasty.
