According to Shuowen Jiezi(說文解字), you(羑) is a phonogram with yang (羊) as the semantic component and jiu(久) as the phonetic component. On the other hand, evidence from both received and excavated texts suggest that the phonetic component of you(羑) is more likely to be in the dental initial groups and you(幽) rhyme group(or a rhyme group close to you). Ma Xulun(馬敘倫)has argued that you (羑) resulted from a miswriting of xiu(羞). Through analysis of variant forms and comparisons with related graphs, the present paper agrees with Ma Xulun and further argues that you(羑) is a character derived from xiu(羞) and that the derivation is completed during Han Dynasty.
