Among studies of the Northern Min dialects, A Chinese-English Dictionary of the Kien-Ning Dialect: Arranged Alphabetically According to the Kien-Ning Romanized (“Jianning Dialect Chinese-English Dictionary”) (hereinafter referred to as “Jianning”) was edited in 1901 by William Charles White (1873-1960), a bishop of the Anglican Church of Canada. Its materials are based on an early Northern Min dialect using the methods of descriptive linguistics. This dictionary provides detailed phonetic materials of Northern Min from more than a hundred years ago. This article intends to sort out the Northern Min phonology, recorded in “Jianning”, through syllable comparison, homophone tables and phoneme induction. We compare “Jianning” with the “Jianzhou Eight-Yin Characters Meaning Handbook”, compiled by Lin Duancai of Fuqing of the same period, modern documents about the Northern Min dialects, and the Jian’ou dialect (Chengguan accent), investigated by the author in Jian’ou County in June 2015, in order to understand the evolution and development of the pronunciation of the Northern Min dialects over the past century.
