Due to Taiwan’s early conscription system, a majority of males have experienced military service, fostering cultural connections between the military and the society at large. These connections also stem from the depiction of military life by singing and transmitting military songs. In the early days of the government’s relocation to Taiwan, many of the national military songs were adapted from those of the mainland era. Recognizing the need for songs that fitted the new situation, the Ministry of National Defense established the “Military Song Composition Group” in 1962, appointing Tai Yi-ching , head of the music department at the Ministry’s Training School for Cadres of Political Work (now Fu Hsing Kang College), to oversee the planning and recruitment of talents for this task. In addition to Tai Yi-ching , the group also included advisers and instructors such as Hsiao Erh-hua and Chang Chin-hung. The group consisted of seven members, who meticulously crafted sophisticated military songs through a rigorous creative process. In the past, national military songs were often originated from solicited contributions or contest submissions. Forming an official composition group was a novel initiative at the time. The songs produced by the group were significantly influenced by the political situation of a nation under martial law, with their lyrics clearly reflecting the missions and beliefs of the national military at that time, as well as the atmosphere of that era. This study utilizes techniques such as archival search, analysis of historical documents, and oral history based on interviews with members of the composition group. Its aim is to investigate and illuminate this unique period in the history of military songs. The study not only highlights the involvement and influence of the group members and their work on the entire musical landscape in Taiwan, but also suggests that their work represented the“classical period” of military song composition. Additionally, it reflects on the current state of development in Taiwan’s military music as it recalls the shared memory and symbols of a time when “real men serve in the military. ”
