The Catholic Church returned to Taiwan in 1859 to carry out missionary work once again. In 1875, it arrived in the central region at Luo Cuò (present-day Luocuo Village, Puxin Township, Changhua County). In 1914, it spread to Taichung. With over a century of missionary history in central Taiwan, the Catholic Church has left behind numerous precious religious artifacts, serving as the finest testament to the continuity of history and culture. The Second Vatican Council, held from 1962 to 1965, aimed at renewing the Church and promoting the unity of Christians. It is the Church publicly engaged in self-reflection, assessment, review, positioning, renewal and planning of its role in the modern world again in the past century, affecting Catholics all over the world. This study takes the artifacts of the Dean of lst Deanery of Taichung in the Taichung Diocese of the Catholic Church as an example. It examines changes in aspects such as the altar's position, Mass rituals, interior arrangement of ritual space within the church, sacrae vestes of clergy, and baptismal record-keeping methods. Through these changes, it illustrates the concepts of unity and localization emphasized by the Second Vatican Council and serves as evidence of the transformation before and after the Council. The Catholic Church has made significant contributions to education, healthcare, and social services in the Taichung area. However, due to the lack of systematically organized historical records on the interactions between the Church and Taiwanese society, coupled with limited attention from most Taiwanese historians towards the history of Catholicism on the island, the history of the Church has not received the proper attention in the context of Taiwanese historical research. Inventory and interpreting historical artifacts of the Church might offer a feasible approach to fill this historical gap.
