本文檢討傳世文獻資料，並參考前人論述，嘗試為六朝吳語的形成，分析其歷史來源。結論認為其中至少有四種語言層次：(1)非漢語層，(2)江東庶民層，(3)江東文讀層，(4)北方士庶層。文中並對各層的音韻特點作了重點式的說明。
