So far scholars researching the history of the Chinese business group “Tai-yi-hou” of Nagasaki have produced rich results in a wide range of subjects such as its business style, trading network, and involvement in regional commerce, etc. However, there has been little attention paid to the group leader, Chen Shi-wang (1869-1940), and his personal activities. This paper is devoted analyzing his life and styles of handling business connections together with their human networks as seen from an intensive exploration of the extant documents on the “Tai-yi-hou”. The research has revealed that the successful career of Chen Shi-wang as a prominent leader of the overseas Chinese community in Nagasaki can be attributed to the widespread contacts in his social life. These include the following important elements: 1. He was the president of the Chinese Equitable Funeral Society (Society of “Longevity”) in 1905; 2. He served as a member of the Consultative Council of Fujian Province in 1911; 3. He was the vice-president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Nagasaki in 1908 and was later elected to its presidency in 1923; 4. He was the Board Director of the Fujian Society of Trade in 1912; 5. He was the Board Director of the Fuji Temple in Nagasaki in 1922; 6. In the following year 1923, he became the Chairman of the Board of the Overseas Chinese Primary School in Nagasaki. As a well-known public figure, He fully utilized an ever-enlarging circle of influence ranging from kinship, Fujian fellowship, colleagueship at hand, down through to political identity, NPO participation and school establishment as well as various cultural resources to organize his own multi-layered human network. Undoubtedly, these wide-reaching connections he relied on must have contributed to his fame and achievements.
