本文主在運用荷蘭東印度公司有關十七世紀東臺灣的資料，探討花東縱谷中、北段阿美族在一六四○、五○年代期間村落區域勢力的變遷。文章的首要目的是重建荷蘭文獻描述的聚落之地理位置，並考證其與相關阿美族村落或氏族間的關係。然後，以聚落為基本單位，進一步探討一六四○、五○年代期間，縱谷中北段村落的區域勢力消長與擴張範疇。

This paper aims at exploring the history of the changing regional village powers of the Amis or the Pangtsah within the north and mid-section of the Hua-tung Valley in the 1640s and the 1650s by employing the documents left by the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC). The paper first reconstructs the geography of settlements described by the Dutch sources and further investigates the relationship between the seventeenth-century settlements and the clan and village identities of the Amis. I then treat the settlements as the basic unit and further try to investigate both the possible transformation of the regional powers and their geo- graphical boundaries of expansion within the north and mid-section of the Hua-tung Valley in the 1640s and the 1650s.
