The major purposes of this study are (1) to determine the significant life experiences affecting the cultivation of environmental activists in Taiwan, and to identify the correlations among those life experiences; (2) to identify the differences in significant life experiences between urban and rural environmental activists; and (3) to identify the intergenerational differences in significant life experiences of the environmental activists. A questionnaire was mailed to the environmental activists to collect their autobiographical memories. One hundred and ninety-eight questionnaires were analyzed. The results indicated that rural-urban differences were found in 'experiences of natural areas (childhood)' 'student organizations', 'social justice', 'beloved place/habitat destruction', 'books', and 'other environmental activists'. The intergenerational differences were found in 'experiences of natural areas (tertiary education)', 'beloved place/habitat destruction', 'concern about pollution', 'environmental organizations', 'life principles', 'tertiary education', and 'student organizations'. Implications for environmental education development and recommendations for further research are provided.
