鹿窟事件的爆發源頭為保密局在溫萬金家裡搜出了一份他在鹿窟基地受訓的 筆記。然而，此為鹿窟事件的觸發因子，情治單位僅由此得知有個中共地下黨員 的基地存在，直到汪枝被捕，才知道基地究竟在何方。表面上，從發現溫萬金的 訓練筆記到汪枝落網是顯而易見的因素，但該事件之所以爆發，其來有自，不宜 如此簡單歸結。 首先，經濟問題是當時基地迫切需解決者，正如陳本江所言，他們固定來自 於高雄吳某守等人的財源中斷，因而不得不下山募款，要募款必須發展，於是埋 下未來基地被破壞的種子。 其次是基地本身的問題，鹿窟基地發展至1952年，群眾對於玉桂嶺事件之後 所實施的集體宣誓與血親連坐產生反感，再加上山上的生活不易，基本人員素質 不一，彼此之間時有衝突，甚至為了爭權而分裂；領導者不僅以勞動訓練之名， 讓他們從事砍柴、燒炭、農耕等勞作，還經常處於飢餓狀態，而且上級禁止本地 男女結婚，自己又秘密地和本地婦女結婚，亦引起群眾憤怒，其內部不穩之態早 已浮現。 再者，陳本江在鹿窟建立基地後，還向外擴展，但由於他們隱蔽於山區，所 發展的群眾亦侷限於當地居民，山民世居，彼此之間不是親戚就是朋友，較不利 於組織隱秘性的安全要求，因而有幾次險些被查獲。 最後，蔣中正退守臺灣的軍、政危機，因為韓戰之爆發而解除後，對內持 續肅清潛伏臺灣的中共地下組織，對社會的控制力日益增強，使得局勢越來越不利於中共地下組織的發展，不但基地主要財源的募款越來越難以進行，而情治單位偵查的觸角也日益延伸，不僅溫萬金和汪枝，其他鹿窟基地重要關係人，也可 能難以避免在各種情形下被查獲，甚至被捕，進而供出基地內情，鹿窟事件的爆 發，只是遲早的問題。

It has been commonly believed that the Luku Communist base was discovered by the Counterintelligence Bureau because it found in Wen Wanjin’s house a notebook he had kept during his training at Luku. However, that was only an ostensive clue that led to the break of the Luku case. The arrest of Wang Zhi, which allowed the Bureau to find out the location of the base, was also an important factor. In addition, there were many fundamental and longer-term developments that caused the demise of the Luku base. First of all, money for the Luku base was an urgent problem that its leader, Chen Benjiang, needed to solve. The poor financial situation made it difficult for the base to survive. Secondly, life in the mountains was not easy. Members at the base were required to engage in “labor training” by cutting firewood, burning charcoal, farming and other works, but they were still kept on short commons. They were also dissatisfied with the collective oath and family implicated punishment that had been imposed upon them after the Yuguiling incident. Cadres were of uneven quality and qualifications, and there were often disputes or even power struggles among them. Moreover, the leaders forbade members to marry local women yet secretly doing so themselves, which angered the members. The base had already been in an unstable condition by 1952. Thirdly, Chen Benjiang and his comrades thought that the environment of Luku was not secure enough and they had to expand outwards. Hoverever, local residents in the mountains were a close community, which could not be easily penetrated. On several occasions the Luku membes were almost spotted by the police. Furthermore, Chiang Kai-shek's military-political establishment in Taiwan became much more secure after the Korean War, and government control over the island grew stronger. There were more and more ways for the intelligence-security network to remove domestic threats, and such situation made it increasingly difficult for Communist underground to operate. Wen Wanjin, Wang Zhi or someone else related to the Luku base would have inevitably been discovered and arrested, so that the police would have learned about the existence of the base. These were the real reasons that led to the collapse of the Luku base.
