Chen Yinke (1890-1969) is a monumental figure in the history of modern Chinese intellectuals. He studied abroad in Europe and the United States, where he acquired Manchu, Mongolian, Tibetan, and Sanskrit. After he returned to China in 1926, Chen Yinke first introduced the European tradition of philology to Chinese academia. When Academia Sinica established the Institute of History and Philology in 1928, Chen Yinke was invited to join the Institute by Fu Sinian (1896-1950) immediately. Chen and the Institute maintained a profound relationship since that point. While he worked at the Institute from 1928 to 1937, Chen Yinke actively embarked on studying multilingual literature with philological methods in order to investigate historical issues that previous Chinese scholars could not address. His academic contributions, including researching Erdeni-yin Tobči, comparing Sanskrit and Tibetan Buddhist scriptures, and organizing the archives of the Grant Secretariat, established the dominant paradigms in these fields. By examining Chen Yinke’s letters, notes, and manuscripts, as well as the archives of the Institute of History and Philology in the Fu Sinian Library, this article illustrates Chen Yinke’s dedication to oriental philology and discusses his academic connections with the Institute.
