美國空軍於 1955 年 1 月進駐臺南基地，航空部隊多由南韓、琉球、菲 律賓調遣而來，初隸美國空軍第 13 臨時航空特遣隊，1966 年 2 月改由美國 空軍第 327 師指揮。美軍人員抵達臺南後，住宿有幾種選擇：基地宿舍、旅 館或招待所、租屋及臺灣的銀行於基地外建造之宿舍，如鄰近臺南機場的 2 處宿舍區，以及毗鄰臺南美國學校的 20 間房舍。 臺南美國學校成立於 1953 學年，原為美軍顧問團學校，由美國海軍管 理，是臺南唯一由美軍直營的學校。1955 年更名為臺南美國小學。1957 年 更名為溫萊特學校，或稱溫萊特中學。1967 年改由美國空軍管轄。隨著駐 臺南美軍逐漸撤離，1975 年該校結束營運，逐漸走入歷史。現存圍牆及校 舍遺構，不但象徵該校的歷史場域與記憶，更是冷戰時期臺美軍事交流的見 證。

The deployment of US forces to Tainan began on January of 1955. Some of the combat units were from South Korea, Okinawa and the Philippines. At the initial stage, they were belonged Air Task Force 13 (Provisional). On February 1966, they were incorporated into the 327th Division of the US Air Force. When the American serviceman came to Tainan, the could choose base living quarters, hotels or hostels, rental house and the dormitories constructed by the banks of Taiwan. Two housing aeras were located near Tainan Air Base. 20 Housing Compounds were adjacent to Tainan American School. Tainan American School was established between 1953 and 1954. It was originally the Tainan MAAG School under the US Navy and the only school in Tainan under US military control. In 1955, the school was renamed Tainan American Elementary School then JMW School or JMW High School in 1957. The school was put under US Air Force in 1967. Following the withdrawal of the US forces in Taiwan, the school was closed in 1975. The remains of the school’s fences and a structure become the symbol of US-ROC joint military exercises during the Cold War.
