Based on the new materialism theories, this study analyzed how the differences among PTT, Facebook, and Dcard influence younger social media users in Taiwan in their public discussion and participation on platforms. The study argues that to investigate the public discussion and participation on social media in more detail, it is necessary to consider the assembled activities on different platforms. By exploring the assemblages of these three platform apps (PTT, Facebook, and Dcard), the study showed that their operations are assembled respectively by different heterogeneous elements such as the app interface arrangements, the intervention of algorithms, and by the coordination of platform users. The study indicates that, through these different assembling operations, PTT users become mobbing netizens under the effects of “mobbing” and “performing-together.” Facebook users tend to become trapped in echo chambers under the effects of “loop” and “effortlessness.” Being a new platform between the other two, Dcard exhibits the effects of “mobbing-like behaviors”, “complexity” and “noises.” It creates a path of least resistance for users as “self-citizens.”
