It is often thought that China was in a state of “continuing revolution” after 1949. People remained mobilized, and the whole society was torn apart again and again. The Chinese Communist Party kept mobilizing the masses because no one dared to oppose the rule of Mao Zedong and other radical leaders. Therefore, “the people” were the main motivating force behind the “continuing revolution” in China after 1949. However, how could a country continue to operate if this country was in a state of continuing revolution? Who would engage in production if most people were mobilized into a political movement? Could even a radical leader like Mao Zedong dare to violate the growing season just for the sake of mobilizing masses into a political movement? This article will take the mass movements in Henan province in the early 1950s as an example to explore the relationship between the growing season and the Chinese communist revolution after 1949.
